"You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone.... Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked 'female.'"

—Erin McKean

"Bakku-Shan" is a piece that had been in my heart a long time before I got around to painting it. I grew up with a lot of mermaids, but as a teenager, I noticed a remarkable difference between mermaids like Ariel and those from traditional mythologies. Mermaids were capable of, and often attributed to being creatures who lured sailors to the deaths. I wanted to paint that kind of mermaid.

She, however, is more than a temptress. The title alludes to the Japanese term that describes a woman who is beautiful from behind, but not when she turns around. She isn't conventionally pretty and knows she doesn't have to be. She doesn't owe beauty to anyone.

The painting also features betta fish, or Siamese fighting fish. They symbolize a defiant spirit, and love of personal individuality and freedom.
